NEON-orama! Engagement Elopement Photography at the Neon Museum Boneyard in Las Vegas, The Fremont, The Strip

April 28, 2014 | By | No Comments

Thinking about Neon Signs? What says “Las Vegas” more than a museum full of neon signs from Las Vegas’ past? Did you know that there is also a “mini-neon museum” down on the Fremont Street Experience? And of course, The Strip is chock full-o-neon everywhere you look.

This post is about neon, neon, neon. In this post I mean to give the newcomer an idea of what sort of neon and neon sign options are available when hiring a Vegas photographer for an elopement, a wedding ceremony, or just ‘cuz you want some neon in your life!

Regret: Why buying the wedding photography you want is so smart.

March 13, 2014 | By | No Comments

[Note: I did not take the above photo – it’s source and copyright are unknown, from Google.]

We regret hiring the wedding photographer we could afford, rather than the one we wanted.

You’re on this website, reading this page because our photos speak to you. You like the feeling, the lighting, the quality you see throughout our portfolio. You want that energy, that skill, that creativity, that excellence we bring to weddings for *your* wedding. We may perfectly fit your budget, or we may be $200 or $2,000 over what you planned to spend on photography and you may be wondering “where in the world will I find that extra money?”

If you hire us, in 40 years you’ll probably have forgotten where you found that extra money (long ago paid off), as you slowly turn each page of your museum quality album with your children and grandchildren, as you re-experience your wedding’s feelings and beauty and what turned out to be the last hugs with precious family and friends. Las Vegas Elopement Photography – Elise & Jeremy Climb to a Higher Level. The Dry Lake Bed & Nelson Ghost Town

March 24, 2013 | By | No Comments

These guys are so freaking CUTE and meant-for-each-other. Elise and Jeremy – true-to-the-core Old Skool rock climbers (we’re talking 15 pitch-type climbers 0_o) – climbed to new heights last week in their Las Vegas elopement. After tying the knot (ahem) in a simple civil ceremony, we met up at the dry lake bed about 45 minutes outside of Vegas for some mega gorgeous magazine-style lighted portraits. We then traversed southeast to the photographically fabulous and friendly Nelson Ghost Town (aka Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours, Nelson’s Landing, and “that place where they blew up the airplane for that Elvis movie”)

One of the reasons your photos look so awesome is because we bring studio lighting with us on-site. You *pop* from the background. And we take care of editing our lights out of your beautiful photos.

20 Reasons Why Jerry Ghionis’ Workshop May Be The Very Best In The World – A Review

July 31, 2012 | By | 2 Comments

This is my review of the week-long intensive wedding photography workshop conducted by Jerry and Melissa Ghionis.

My photography education has consisted entirely of mentoring and workshops with the people whose work I admire, and practicing those lessons learned. Since 2007 I have invested well over $20,000 in more than a dozen workshops, from some of the most well-known photographers in the world. While some have been “eh”, most have been quite good. I’ve listed many of the mentors I’ve studied with elsewhere on this blog.

But I just returned from a week-long intensive workshop with Jerry & Melissa Ghionis in Los Angeles. It was hands-down the very best workshop for wedding & portrait photography I have ever taken. I wanted to share some of the reasons why.

  1. Jerry Ghionis and his beautiful, talented, gracious wife Melissa Ghionis listen. They listen to each participant’s needs and challenges and tailor their workshop & advice to those individual needs.
  2. They are a well-oiled machine and run a very efficient, dense workshop.
  3. They work incredibly hard.
  4. They give tremendous value for your money.
  5. The marketing critique alone is worth $2,000. After seeing their existing marketing materials, Jerry makes specific, smart recommendations to everyone.
  6. Jerry teaches to all levels at once. Our group of 20 had some very experienced full-time wedding & portrait photographers, and some folks just getting started. Jerry somehow taught technique to all of us at the same time, leaving no-one behind, nor boring the more advanced.
  7. I will never again avoid shooting with my clients in direct sun – Jerry showed us how to get shockingly soft light in the hardest light imaginable.
  8. Jerry gave us a formula, a series of steps, guaranteed to improve each photograph you make, if you follow the steps: LLPEE.
  9. Known as the “MacGyver” of wedding photography, Jerry taught us how to create the most gorgeous photographs in the most unappealing locations, e.g., a trashy back-alley in broad daylight.
  10. Jerry taught us to slow down, be deliberate, don’t over-shoot, get the shot right, in-camera, then stop, move on.
  11. Jerry and Melissa are wonderfully human and approachable. While rock-stars in our industry, they are very real, vulnerable people.
  12. Jerry – whose albums have won more Album of The Year awards than any other photographer in the world (by a mile) – showed us one of his earliest albums from many years ago, that was so bad, and that incorporated so many mistakes of design and photography, that it humanized this Michael Jordan of Wedding Photography and gave each of us hope that we, too, can learn to become great and to create great albums.
  13. Jerry gave us excellent, specific advice on pricing and all manner of business best practices.
  14. In the personal one-on-one mentor session, Jerry gave each of us personalized advice on how we can immediately and significantly improve our income as photographers.
  15. While I pride myself on my ability to use off-camera lighting on-location, Jerry gave me a great new respect for the power and beauty and professionalism of using direct and reflected sunlight and other available light, if used the right way.
  16. Jerry introduced us to the art of posing – a task that most photographers find daunting and intimidating. We practiced and troubleshooted posing challenges over and over.
  17. Jerry gave us dozens of practical methods to elicit genuine beautiful emotions from our clients.
  18. Jerry was always honest in his critiques of our work, and always a gentleman, no matter how awful our work.
  19. Jerry taught each of us how to critique our own work after the fact, but more importantly, he taught us to critique our work in the viewfinder, so that we make the shot perfect the first time.
  20. Jerry & Melissa are incredibly generous in all ways – with their time, their attention, their financial resources, their invaluable experience.

This is the best workshop I have ever taken.

Honored and Nervous to shoot a famous Australian Photographer, Yikes!

June 26, 2012 | By | No Comments

I was honored recently when Natalie Howe, one of the most successful, awarded and famous wedding & portrait photographers in Australia chose FogartyFOTO to do some portraits of her and her beautiful family here in Las Vegas.

Her husband and she had an uber-fun renewal  ceremony @ Graceland Wedding Chapel (why Graceland? ‘cuz Bon Jovi got married there! of course! 🙂 )

Natalie and Chris have been married 81/2 years (very important not to forget the 1/2, right Chris?)

My wife Chris & I met Natalie and her husband Chris and their son Tom and Natalie’s fellow photographer Kate Lindsay at Graceland, and off we went!

Natalie is so use to posing her own clients, she automatically posed herself and her family!  Nice job Natalie!  Even Kate got in on the action by assisting Steve with some gear.  She is so use to being Natalie’s assistant, it was pure instinct.   We had so much fun with these guys.  We did a lot in a short time.

The only thing we didn’t do was ” throw another shrimp on the barbie!”  Maybe next time.  Have a fun rest of your vacation traveling all over the US.

As they had some Vegas things to do – shows to catch, parties to make – we didn’t have that much time. But that didn’t stop us from making some awesome magazine-style portraits.

This shot was taken by Kate from inside the air conditioned car on this 108º Vegas day.

You wouldn’t know it from the photos but one of these folks is suffering from heat stroke or the like – not enough snickers bars & water to fend off the intense Vegas sun. They were all good sports about it and we shot through it.

This was truly one of the most rewarding and fun photo shoots we’ve ever done!
