Trash The Dress - "Day After" Portraits - Bridals Archives - Page 2 of 3 - Steven Joseph Photography

“Day After” Portraits, or Bridals. Done several days before or after the rush and zaniness of the wedding day. Your wedding day is actually not a very good time to get pristine bridal portraits. It’s the day when schedules slip, people run late, and everything takes longer than you expect. On your wedding day, brides & grooms want to spend their time with friends and family, not following a photographer around for two hours. We recommend Bridals be scheduled separately from the wedding day, so you can enjoy your wedding day, and get the best portraits of you and your groom possible.

Behind the Scenes - on location lighting

I am so grateful to have been invited by the incredibly talented and effervescent Chelsea Nicole to lead the lighting component of our annual on-location photo shoot. It will be Monday, December 5, 2011 from 3pm ’til dusk out at the Jean dry lake bed. For full details, including directions, you should check out the Vegas PUG Facebook page. We’re already expecting over 60 photographers – all of whom are in for a very big fun beautiful surprise regarding our models. I will demonstrate how dramatically different portraits can look when you bring strobes and you are Master of the Light! If you’re not yet signed up (it’s FREE) come on out to get a chance to flex your photo muscles in a new direction. Besides the off-camera strobe group, photographers will have the opportunity to visit 3 other groups, all with their own models. And, as far as I know, you get to keep and use the photos in your portfolio.

“Trash The Dress” / “Day After” / “Bridal” Portraits

“Trash The Dress” / “Day After” / “Bridal” Portraits. Whatever you call them, I think they’re a really good idea.

Often, when a bride or a couple want the very best portraits of themselves in their wedding finery, time is an issue. Finding two hours on the wedding day is difficult, and requires seeing one another before the ceremony. A good solution is a “Day After” portrait session – which is usually not done the day after, but several days or even a week or more after the actual wedding day. The obvious disadvantage is that you have to get all gussied up again. The advantages, though, are really big.

  • You can spend much more time on your wedding day being with family and friends
  • With less to worry about, you will be much less stressed on your wedding day
  • You don’t have to get ready so early
  • You can honor the tradition of not seeing one another before the ceremony, if that is important to you
  • You can be much more creative and flexible, visiting multiple locations and taking advantage of lighting equipment that is impractical on a wedding day. I’m referring to the studio-quality lighting that I used to create these photos out in the Nevada/California desert. I would never bring 3 powerful studio lights and their c-stands and batteries and softboxes etc on a wedding day. On a Day After portrait, I always bring such gear.

Viva Las Vegas – A Calendar Tribute

Elvis-Pink-Cadillac-Las-Vegas-Chapel-Tribute-Calendar

Constance and Brandon are two of the most gracious and likeable – not to mention two of the hottest – people I have ever had the pleasure to photograph. The work here was done recently for an appreciation calendar put together by my good friend Diane Schiller, owner of Renta Dress & Tux Shop, one of the best places in Vegas to get couture gowns or tuxes in a hurry.

Above is a scan of the back page of  the calendar. Below is a gallery of some of my favorite photos with this totally hot couple. My favoritest of all (favoritest? 😉 ) is the series of Constance and Brandon luxuriating in and hottifying this fabulous pink Elvis cadillac. Pure Vegas. Pure fun.

#8. Shoot Into the Sun.

June 16, 2010 | By | No Comments

If you don’t have off-camera strobes or don’t know how to use them [see #4], turn your subjects’ backs to the sun, shoot in manual mode and expose for your subjects’ faces. Your photos will immediately be better than any point-and-shoot civilian who tries this. Their photos will be dark and underexposed.

Turn your subjects’ backs to the sun.
