Available Light Photography After Sundown – Don’t Fear The Dark

December 10, 2012 | By | No Comments

I saw additional photos from this wedding that were done at night of the bride and groom and some of the outdoor areas of [******* ********].  I would absolutely love to be able to get a few of those shots to use as they were fantastic and so many brides are scared of doing photos in the dark. This would definitely show how it can be done when a professional photographer is hired!
CATERING MANAGER, WEDDING VENUE

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

When a wedding photographer you’re interviewing proudly says that s/he’s an “available light” photographer, that’s usually code for “I don’t know how to use off-camera lights and I really don’t own any.”

Which is fine for day-time weddings.

However, the final 1/3 of most traditional weddings takes place after the sun goes down. And many reception halls are very dim even during the day.

A professional wedding photographer has to know how to elegantly light up the dark.

Just today the catering manager of a major Las Vegas wedding venue told me that many brides are “scared of doing photos in the dark”. Could it be because the “available light” photographer they’re considering is scared, too?

When interviewing photographers, it’s probably wise of you to ask them questions like:

  1. How do you handle formal portraits in the dark?
  2. How do you shoot a dark reception room?

We love available light. But when the sun goes down and there isn’t any, we make beautiful light for you with our discreet professional off-camera lighting gear.

Why “off-camera” lighting? Because on-camera direct flash looks flat and amateur, like it was taken with a disposable camera. Off-camera light gives depth and pop and magazine-quality to the most important photos in your life.

If your available light photographer shows few or no night-time photos on their website, you should be concerned.

We’re not afraid of the dark 🙂 and when you hire the right photographer, you shouldn’t be, either 🙂

The above photo shows how dark a typical wedding reception hall is. The photos above & below were taken seconds apart – one when my lights didn’t pop, the other with four Speedlites popping all over the reception hall to catch your beautiful moments. The photo above and below were taken seconds apart – the above with the available light typical of many hotel reception rooms, the photo below with my pro lights throughout the room popping.

Margaret & Judd – Griffin Mansion, Loews Lake Las Vegas, Desert Bridal

I can’t rave enough about Margaret and Judd, two of the finest people we’ve ever had the honor to photograph, and to get to know. I love that these guys scheduled dedicated time for “Trash The Dress” bride & groom portraits, several days after their wedding. It’s a great way to go, for so many reasons.

  1. It takes the pressure off on the wedding day – I don’t feel like I have to drag my couple away from their friends and family to make special portraits. Everybody’s more relaxed.
  2. We have time to do it right. In the portrait above, we drove 45 minutes to the Boulder City Dry Lake Bed, I set up some serious studio lighting, and we made gorgeous portraits I simply couldn’t make on the day of the wedding. We gave ourselves time, and the results show.
  3. In the same vein, we were able to visit multiple locations on our Trash The Dress session. In addition to the dry lake bed we spent time at the luxurious Loew’s Lake Las Vegas.

I love the open, light-filled spaces throughout Griffin Mansions.Margaret did such an incredible job planning just about every detail. Beautiful mother and beautiful bride.Literally hours before this photo was made, this green grass was a dug-up dirt driveway, with the amazing landscaping crew furiously racing to transform the driveway into this beautiful lawn. Well done!Moments before Margaret walked out toward her new life with Judd the Stud. The beautiful bride, anxious, happy, content. Here she comes!Judd and the bridal party – everyone looking so fine.Don’t you just wanna kiss him, too?
Yet another great detail planned & executed by Margaret – a perfect sparkler exit.I didn’t notice the full moon until I started editing photos. Fun shot! Fun group!More Trash The Dress awesomeness. We walked around Loew’s Lake Las Vegas, making pretty photos. Everybody is so friendly out at Lake Las Vegas.
LOVE this! While many of the props, and all of the lighting is mine, the mega cool and personalized backdrop for this Crazy Corner is all Margaret and Judd. I love the look and personalization.

Does the Quality of 2nd Photography Matter? Hell Yea!

December 23, 2011 | By | No Comments

Does the Quality of 2nd Photography Matter? The short answer is: Hell Yeah! but not for everyone.

Currently I offer my clients two levels of 2nd photography:

  • Artisan, and Associate. Artisan 2nd Photography costs my clients $200 an hour.
  • Associate 2nd Photography is free.

Why the big difference in price?

Artisan 2nd Photographers are full-time wedding photographers who happen to be available on the day of your wedding. They are my peers, my competitors, my friends. They are skilled craftsmen and artists whose work I admire greatly. They possess many hundreds or even thousands of hours of experience. They know exactly what needs doing at your wedding, and how to use their gear to get it done. They’re not figuring out f/stops and ISO and lighting. They’re not wondering how to pose the groomsmen or how to make your cake & reception hall look stellar. They mastered all that long ago. And their work is outstanding. Here are just a few examples of the gorgeous work from some of the 2nd photographers my couples & I have been fortunate enough to get on their wedding day.

Associate 2nd Photographers work for free. They are willing to work for free for many reasons. They want the practice. They may already be accomplished in family portrait or another type of photography, or they may be just breaking in. They may need to master their gear and learn the ropes in one of the most demanding photography environments there is – weddings. They may need to develop a wedding portfolio for their own websites.

Regardless, while they may produce outstanding work as 2nd photographer for your wedding, I do not expect that, nor should my clients. Which is why they are free.

Associate 2nd photography coverage is a good option for couples who weren’t planning on having a 2nd but welcome the possibility of extra coverage with uncertain results.

And for those couples who expect the kind of outstanding wedding photography that only comes from years of experience, Artisan 2nd photography is worth the extra dollars.
