Real or Fake? Are Emotions in Photography Fake if the Photographer Drew Them Out? No.

February 6, 2016 | By | No Comments

All of these images have three things in common.

First, they’ve caught great emotion between family members in-the-moment.

Second, the emotions in these photos are 100% genuine.

Third, I elicited these emotions through my words and voice and personality.

Are these emotions fake because I drew them out?

Definitely not.

One of the biggest challenges professional photographers face when putting regular people in front of our cameras is getting them to relax. Most people (myself included) are not very comfortable in front of the camera. We become self-conscious. We make awkward artificial smiles. We become very *aware* of the camera.

When creating  portraits one of my big jobs is to get my subjects to forget that they’re in front of a camera – even for just one second, because all I need is one second to capture amazing moments overflowing with deep genuine emotion. Emotion that I’ve drawn out. Pure child-like unencumbered real emotion.
